Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 2026

Trip Atlas respects your privacy. This policy describes what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices. We do not use your data for tracking, third-party advertising, or marketing purposes. We do not sell your personal data.

Data we collect

We collect the following data to provide the app and its features. "Collect" means data is sent off your device in a way that we or our third-party partners can access it to provide the service.

  • Contact information: Name and email address. Used to create and secure your account (passwords are hashed and not readable by us).
  • Phone number (optional): If you choose to verify a phone number, we store it so we can help people who already have your number find your profile. We store a one-way hash of your number for this matching — see "Finding people you know" below.
  • User content: Trips, collections, photos, places you add, and other content you create in the app. Stored to provide the service and display your travel history.
  • Identifiers: Your account ID and, if you enable push notifications, a device token. Used to identify your account and send you notifications (you can disable notifications in device Settings).
  • Location data (including precise geolocation): When you use maps, search for places, or add locations to trips, we send location information (e.g. coordinates) to our mapping and search provider so we can show maps and suggest places. Places you save (Postcards) store precise coordinates so we can display them on your map. When you use AI features, those coordinates may be sent to OpenAI as context — see the AI section below.
  • Search history: When you search for places in the app (e.g. in the map or when adding a location), your search queries are sent to our search provider to return results.
  • Shipping & recipient addresses: When you mail a postcard or order a printed book, we collect the recipient's name and postal address so we can print and ship the item. We use this solely for fulfillment and to show your order history. Addresses are encrypted at rest, sent to our print/mail partners (below) to fulfill your order, and automatically deleted when you delete your account or after a retention period once an order is complete. You can also import a recipient's address from your device contacts — that selection happens on your device (we don't read your contact list), and the address is only sent to us when you place the order.

Third-party partners

We use the following third-party partners whose code or services are part of the app. They receive data as described below. We do not allow them to use your data for their own advertising or to track you across other apps or sites.

  • Mapbox: We use Mapbox for maps, place search, and geocoding. When you view maps, search for places, or we look up locations for your photos or trips, we send location data (e.g. coordinates) and search queries to Mapbox so they can return map tiles and search results. Mapbox processes this data according to their Privacy Policy.
  • OpenAI: We use OpenAI to power AI features. When you use those features, we send the relevant content to OpenAI so they can process it and return results. See the next section for details.
  • Lob: We use Lob to print and mail postcards to recipients in the United States. When you send a US postcard, we send the recipient's name and postal address (and the card's content) to Lob so they can print and mail it. Lob processes this data according to their Privacy Policy.
  • Prodigi: We use Prodigi to print and ship books and to fulfill international postcards. When you place such an order, we send the recipient's name and postal address (and the item's content) to Prodigi so they can print and ship it. Prodigi processes this data according to their Privacy Policy.

AI features and sharing with OpenAI

Some features use artificial intelligence powered by OpenAI. When you use these features, we send the relevant content to OpenAI so they can process it and return results. This includes:

  • Travel Agent: Questions you ask and context about your trips (e.g. trip names, dates, places) are sent to OpenAI to generate answers and suggestions.
  • Trip and place descriptions: When we generate a description or summary for a trip or a place (e.g. automatically after you add photos), place details such as names, locations, and dates may be sent to OpenAI. You can turn this off in Settings → AI & Privacy ("AI trip & place descriptions").

Appearing in others' Travel Agent queries: When a follower uses their Travel Agent, the query may include context from trips you've shared with them (subject to each trip's privacy setting). That context is sent to OpenAI as part of their query. You can opt out of this at any time in Settings → AI & Privacy— turning off the "Let others' Travel Agents see my trips" toggle removes your trips from all future queries by other users.

OpenAI processes this data according to their Privacy Policy. We do not use OpenAI to train their models on your content for our use of their API. By using any AI-powered feature (the Travel Agent, or generated trip and place descriptions), you agree to this sharing. You can avoid sharing data with OpenAI by not using the Travel Agent and turning off AI descriptions in Settings.

Finding people you know

Verifying a phone number is optional. If you do verify one, other people who already have your number saved in their contacts may be able to find your profile so they can follow you. This matching is done using a one-way hash of phone numbers — we don't share your number with anyone, and we don't read your contact list off your device. If you'd rather not be discoverable this way, don't verify a phone number, or remove it from your account.

How we use data

We use your data to operate the app (e.g. storing trips, syncing photos, sending notifications), to improve the product, and to comply with law. For maps and search, we send location and search data to Mapbox as stated. For AI features, we send the data described above to OpenAI as stated. We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use your data for tracking (linking with third-party data for advertising or sharing with data brokers).

Your choices

You can delete your account and associated data at any time from Settings → Delete Account in the app. Deletion is permanent. You can also turn off push notifications in your device settings.
